Changed name to Modern Theatre in 1934.

  • Existed as early as 1932, in business as late as 1949. (Probably was opened years earlier, and existed past ’49)
  • Managed by John P. Pietrantoni (as of 1942 managed by John P. Anthony, perhaps he simplified his name?)
  • Could be considered a 2nd or 3rd run house.

  1. Richard M Simoneau

On the 1930 Federal census my grandfather Alphonse Simoneau was employed as manager of the Modern Theater in Manchester NH and my father Alphonse Jr. was the projectionist. My grandmother, uncle and aunts provided entertainment while reels of film were changed or projection problems occurred.

The Modern in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s I am told was a silent movie theater and it gradually went down hill as “Talkies” took over. The entire family moved to San Diego.

One picture available of what is said is The Modern (Based on Genealogy Study)
